Aurelius Alabast
The Archivist · Warden of Diregulf · Son of Lux
A Radiant of divine lineage stretching back fourteen centuries, Aurelius Alabast has witnessed the birth of Diregulf and shaped its course from the shadows of history — scholar, counsellor, and keeper of truths that others have long forgotten.
“I have watched empires reduce themselves to footnotes. I have no interest in watching Diregulf become one.”
— Aurelius Alabast, addressing the Guild Council
✦Origins & Divine Conception
Aurelius Alabast was not born by chance. His existence was the deliberate act of a goddess. Lux, deity of light, knowledge, and sacred memory, determined that the mortal world required a living instrument — an archivist capable of enduring centuries and preserving the threads of history that mortals allow to fray. To accomplish this, she possessed the body of one of her most devoted priestesses, temporarily inhabiting flesh so that she might choose a suitable father.
His father, a half-elf of unknown name now lost to history, likely never understood the full significance of what had occurred. Aurelius himself does not know the man. What he carries instead is the certainty of purpose — the knowledge that he was shaped, not stumbled upon, and that Lux’s light lives somewhere in the architecture of his soul.
This divine origin is precisely what makes him a Radiant in the truest sense: not merely a mortal with divine heritage, but a being upon whom celestial contact left a permanent, indelible mark. The tension the Radiant entry in Diregulf’s records describes — the mark versus the person, the holy symbol versus the individual — is not abstract for Aurelius. It is fourteen centuries of lived experience.
◈The Forgotten Name
Somewhere in the first centuries of his life, Aurelius lost his original name. Whether this was a deliberate act of self-erasure, the casualty of unimaginable grief, or simply the slow erosion of a mind that has carried too much for too long — he does not say. Perhaps he no longer knows.
He chose Aurelius Alabast as his alias at some point before the founding of Diregulf. Aurelius, meaning golden or radiant — an echo of his mother’s divine domain, and an unconscious acknowledgement of what he is. Alabast, drawn from alabaster: pale, smooth, and translucent, the material through which old temples let sacred light bleed in. The name is, in its way, a quiet devotion.
⊕History with Diregulf
Pre-Founding
The Guidance
Aurelius encounters the individual who would become the Founder of Diregulf. Whether this meeting was coincidence or arranged by Lux is unclear. He provides guidance, lore, and the kind of counsel that comes from having watched civilisations rise and collapse.
Early Settlement
The Archivist Takes Root
As Diregulf grows from a settlement into something more permanent, Aurelius establishes his role. He does not rule. He does not command. He observes, and when asked, he advises.
Guild Era
The Counsellor of Guilds
As the Guild structures of Diregulf crystallise into political power, Aurelius moves fluidly among their councils. He holds no seat. He is given no vote. Yet few major decisions are made without someone seeking his perspective.
Present Day
Warden in the Background
Aurelius continues to operate at the margins of Diregulf's political and social life — present at critical moments, absent when not needed, impossible to fully categorise.
◇Personality
Fourteen centuries leave marks that no armour can hide. Aurelius carries his age in the particular stillness of someone who has learned that most crises resolve themselves if you wait long enough — and the particular weariness of someone who has also watched enough of them not resolve at all.
Wise & Patient
He does not rush. He has watched urgency lead good people into catastrophe too many times to mistake speed for wisdom.
Mysterious & Cryptic
He rarely gives a direct answer when an indirect one will plant a more useful seed. He believes people learn better when they arrive at truth themselves.
Warm but Distant
He is genuinely fond of people. He is also genuinely aware that they will die, and he will remember them — a careful half-step of emotional distance, not from cruelty, but from survival.
Devoted to Lux
His relationship with his divine mother is complex — reverence mixed with something that occasionally resembles resentment. He was made for a purpose, and he knows it.
✧The Radiant Mark
Where other Radiant are marked by contact that entered a bloodline generations back, Aurelius is the direct product of that contact — a being whose celestial essence is not diluted or distant but present, architectural, woven into how he functions. After fourteen centuries, the mark does not fade. It deepens.
The tension the Radiant community knows well — others projecting holiness onto individuals who did not ask to be symbols — has had centuries to press itself into him. Most Radiant in Diregulf navigate that weight for a human lifetime. Aurelius has been navigating it since before the city existed. The particular weariness of being seen as a symbol rather than a person is not occasional for him. It is chronic.
✧Appearance
Aurelius presents as a figure of indeterminate but clearly advanced age — unhurried in movement, deliberate in manner. He favours layered, decorated robes that suggest wealth without announcing it: deep colours accented with gem-like details and gold trim, the practical wardrobe of a man who has learned that appearance shapes how conversations begin. He wears a wide-brimmed hat — a signature he has maintained for longer than most civilisations lasted.
His eyes are a deep green flecked with gold — the gold a visible mark of his Radiant heritage, easily missed unless the light catches them at the right angle. He wears tinted violet glasses, an affectation old enough that most in Diregulf have simply stopped questioning it. In absolute darkness, those who look carefully may notice a faint, warm luminescence at the edges of him — like candlelight through parchment.
⋄Role in the Campaign
Aurelius serves as a living repository of Diregulf’s history and the wider lore of the world. As a DM tool, he can deliver exposition organically — players must earn his trust and ask the right questions to unlock what he knows. He does not volunteer information unprompted.
Keeper of Records
Aurelius maintains an archive — physical or metaphysical — of Diregulf's history. Players researching past events, forgotten figures, or the origins of current conflicts may find him the most reliable source, if they can navigate his tendency to answer questions with more questions.
Divine Intermediary
As the son of Lux and a Radiant of unusual depth, Aurelius occupies a unique position between mortal and divine. Players seeking contact with Lux's domain, information about divine law, or guidance during cosmological crises may find that Aurelius is the closest accessible point of contact — a fraying thread that still connects mortal Diregulf to something far older and larger.
Advisor to Leadership
Guild councils, factional leaders, and power brokers are accustomed to seeking his counsel — though never on the record. Players who gain his confidence may find him an invaluable political asset, able to provide context, historical precedent, and carefully-worded advice that shapes outcomes without him ever appearing to.
